Q:
Where do I start?

A:
For utility patents and individual inventors we recommend a patent search as the place to start. If the patent search doesn't reveal prior inventive activity in the area of your invention / idea then we generally suggest a provisional patent application as the next logical step before a non-provisional patent application is filed. The provisional patent application may be "converted" to a non-provisional patent application within one year of filing the provisional patent application; during that year you can "test" the marketability of your invention / idea.
